Supported platforms for SAP GUI for Windows
SAP GUI for Windows 8.00:
Windows 10 32-bit (only Education, Pro, and Enterprise editions)
Windows 10 64-bit on x64 (AMD) and Intel EM64T (only Education, Pro, and Enterprise editions)
Windows Server 2016 64-bit on x64 (AMD) and Intel EM64T
Windows Server 2019 64-bit on x64 (AMD) and Intel EM64T
Windows 11 on x64 (AMD) and Intel EM64T (only Education, Pro, and Enterprise editions)
Windows Server 2022 on x64 (AMD) and Intel EM64T:
You cannot use the 64-bit version of SAP GUI for Windows 8.00 (see SAP Notes 3075781 and 3218166) on 32-bit platforms. In addition, you cannot use it to work with old SAP products that use SAP_BASIS versions below 7.00.
Virtualization products/Windows Terminal Services and SAP GUI for Windows
Note the following: The following statements apply to SAP GUI for Windows and not to other SAP components or products (see http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/virtualization for more information).
Due to the increased number of different products in the area of software virtualization and terminal services for SAP GUI for Windows, explicit releases for virtualization software or terminal services software are no longer performed. We assume that the relevant products respond to SAP GUI like a natively installed operating system. This also applies to new versions of products released in the past. What is more, the same releases mentioned above also apply to the host operating system (that is, the operating system on which SAP GUI is actually executed). If you want to use a virtualization software or terminal services software together with SAP GUI for Windows, this means the following for you:
If an error occurs during the use of SAP GUI for Windows, which can also be reproduced without virtualization software or terminal services software in SAP GUI for Windows, contact SAP Support. We will analyze the error and, if required, provide a correction for SAP GUI for Windows.
If an error occurs during the use of SAP GUI for Windows, that can only be reproduced when using virtualization software or terminal services software in SAP GUI for Windows, contact the manufacturer of this software. In many cases, a corresponding configuration of the software is required.
In each case, your first step should be to check whether the same error also occurs without the software you use.Historically, releases have been made for the following products:
- Windows Terminal Server and Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop (for details refer to SAP Note 138869).
- VMWare (Horizon) View and ThinApp
- Microsoft App-V
Support for Microsoft Windows Service Packs/Windows 10 updates (for example, Anniversary Update or Creators Update)
There usually is no need to declare whether a Microsoft Service Pack can be used in conjunction with SAP GUI or not. In general, the operating system must remain compatible. Ensuring this is the responsibility of the operating system vendor. Since this may not always be possible we take part in Microsoft's so-called "Beta Test Program". We test every SP published by Microsoft before it is released, which gives us the chance to influence the content of the SP. If there are any compatibility problems in a service pack, these SPs are listed here.
The following statement applies regarding Windows updates (such as Anniversary Update/Creators Update: With the SAP GUI release for Windows 10/11, the updates for Windows 10/11 are supported, too. Naturally, the assumption here is that these updates behave in a compatible way. To ensure this, we carry out relevant tests of SAP GUI with new Windows updates. In the case of serious problems, we will let you know by means of a corresponding SAP Note.
SAP GUI for Windows and SAP GUI for Java are only supported on Windows versions that are supported by Microsoft (Extended Support at least). This means that older Service Packs are not supported by SAP given that they are not supported by Microsoft as well.
Notes on upgrading the SAP GUI when you upgrade the operating system
If you upgrade your operating system (for example, from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10), simultaneously upgrading the SAP GUI involves a negligible amount of additional work.
If you are using disk images, you can now also install a newer SAP GUI version on the image along with the new operating system.
Uninstalling an older SAP GUI version is NOT necessary as long as the older version at least is 4.5B.
SAP GUI on 64-bit platforms
Up to and including SAP GUI for Windows 7.70, there is no separate SAP GUI version for 64-bit operating systems. However, you can use the standard SAP GUI versions for Windows 32-bit operating systems on 64-bit platforms (as long as your system has the SAP GUI, operating system, and hardware versions specified in the list above).
As of SAP GUI for Windows 8.00, we deliver a real 64-bit version of SAP GUI for Windows in addition to the 32-bit version. For more information, see SAP Notes 3075781 and 3218166.
SAP GUI for Windows will never be supported on Itanium (IA64) systems.
SAP GUI for Windows and Windows on ARM
Currently, we do not plan to publish a version of SAP GUI for Windows for the Windows on ARM platform (see also https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/arm/overview). The effort required to create and maintain such a version of SAP GUI for Windows would be much higher than for the 64-bit version of SAP GUI for Windows, which is available with Release 8.00. No such investment is currently planned. If you want to use such a platform, we recommend that you check whether you can use a different SAP GUI version than SAP GUI for Windows.
SAP GUI for Windows and Web browsers
SAP GUI for Windows has several dependencies on Web browsers:
SAP GUI for Windows can display HTML content within the SAP GUI window. The SAP GUI HTML control, which uses an external browser control, is used for this purpose.
SAP GUI for Windows can call HTML content in an external browser window. To do this, you can either use the SAP GUI HTML Control or start the corresponding browser/document using ShellExecute.
SAP GUI for Windows can be displayed within a browser window ("inplace"). This happens, for example, when embedded in the SAP Enterprise Portal.
For more information about this topic, see SAP Note 2913405.
The end of support for Internet Explorer (https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/05/19/the-future-of-internet-explorer-on-windows-10-is-in-microsoft-edge/) implemented by Microsoft and its effects on SAP GUI for Windows are explained in SAP Note 3058309.
Tablet PC/touch support
SAP GUI for Windows does not support touch input.
Support is not provided for voice data entry or special entry mechanisms.
Handwriting recognition can only take place using programs that act exactly like a keyboard vis à vis SAP GUI and return the detected characters to SAP GUI in a format that can be evaluated by SAP GUI (UTF-8). This is necessary because SAP GUI for Windows is a non-Unicode program. Entries of programs that return Unicode characters to SAP GUI are not displayed correctly.
Apple Macintosh, Unix, Linux
Apple Macintosh and Linux platforms are supported by the platform-independent SAP GUI for the JAVA Environment (see SAP Note 146505).
